What Does the Meta Glasses Recording Light Actually Cover? Read Meta's Own Wording

Meta has spent a year answering questions about its camera glasses with a single feature, and it is a good feature. There is a small white light on the frame. It comes on when the glasses capture, it has no off switch, covering it disables the camera, and since July destroying it disables the camera too.
Every part of that is true, and it is the answer to a slightly different question from the one people ask at a café table. The question is is the camera on. The light answers is this going to the gallery.
What the two documents actually say
Meta has published the specification in two places, and they agree with each other.
The company's own questions-and-answers post puts it this way: "Whenever content is being captured for your gallery, this white light blinks to let people know you're taking a photo or video you could save to your gallery and share with others. For a photo, it blinks briefly, while for a video, it continues to blink for as long as you are recording." The same post confirms the capture LED "has no off switch," describes the camera being disabled when the LED is blocked from the second generation onward, and the July update extending that to a light "physically tampered with or destroyed."
The help page for capturing photos and videos describes the light the same way — as telling other people that you are taking photos or recording video, to save to your gallery or to stream.
Read those sentences for their subject. The subject is not the camera. It is content being captured for your gallery, and streaming. The light is defined by where the picture is going.
That is a real guarantee and it covers the thing most people do most of the time. It is simply narrower than "the camera is open", and the difference has a name now that these glasses do more than take pictures.
It is worth saying why that scoping was reasonable when it was written. The first generation of these frames did one thing with a camera: it made a file. A light that announced file-making announced everything the camera could do, and defining the indicator by destination cost nothing, because there was only one destination. The specification did not get worse. The product grew a second thing to do with the same lens, and a sentence written for the first one carried on being the answer.
The question neither document answers
These are AI glasses. A wearer can ask Meta AI to look at something and tell them what it is, and doing that opens the camera as surely as pressing the button does.
Neither of Meta's two documents says whether the capture light covers that. They do not say it stays dark, either. They describe gallery captures and streaming, and stop.
That is not only our reading. A biometrics trade publication reviewing the same materials made the identical observation: the company repeatedly says the LED illuminates when the glasses capture photographs or video "for your gallery," and does not clarify whether the light must activate whenever the cameras, microphones or other sensors are processing information for an AI service.
The honest state of the record is therefore a gap, not a scandal. Nobody outside Meta has published a definitive answer, and the two places a person would look do not contain one. A bystander reading the specification carefully still cannot tell what the light is promising them.
The prototype where the gap is the design
Then there is the version of these glasses that would not be answering a question at all, but watching continuously.
The Financial Times reported a "super-sensing" prototype that would collect continuous audio and take photos every few seconds, so a wearer could later query the AI about what they saw or heard. Two details from that reporting matter here. Raw footage and audio would not be stored by Meta or be accessible to the user. And executives have discussed not activating the LED while those features are in use.
Take that at exactly its weight. It is a prototype, and it is a discussion, not a shipped decision or an announced policy. Nothing on sale today behaves that way.
But it tells you what the light is understood to be for inside the company that built it. If the indicator were a statement that the camera is open, switching it off during continuous capture would be unthinkable. If it is a statement about content going to your gallery, then a feature that captures nothing for your gallery raises a design question rather than a contradiction — which is the tension trade coverage keeps circling, and why bystander questions have not gone away despite a year of hardening the indicator.
There is a second reason the distinction is worth holding on to. Almost every safeguard argument made about these glasses in the past year has been an argument about the light — how bright it is, how big, whether it can be covered, whether it can be removed, what happens if you try. All of that treats the indicator as the thing being tested. But an indicator is only as good as the events it is wired to, and the wiring is the part that has never been published. A two-millimetre light that reliably reports the wrong set of events is not a better safeguard than a dimmer one that reports the right set; it is a more convincing one.
Why this is the wearer's problem too
There is a matching gap on the other side of the frame, and it turned up in this desk's previous piece.
Meta does not train its AI on the photos sitting in your gallery — but the moment a wearer asks Meta AI about an image, that image can be used for training and reviewed by a human, and in the United States and Canada there is no toggle to stop it.
Line the two up. The gallery capture is the one the light announces to the room, and the one Meta will not train on. The AI request is the one whose disclosure to bystanders is unspecified, and the one that can go for training and human review. The same action sits outside both promises at once, and it is the action the product is being built around.
That symmetry is what makes this more than a documentation quibble. Two separate promises were made about these glasses — one to the person in front of them and one to the person wearing them — and both were written around the gallery. The bystander is told the light means a gallery capture. The wearer is told gallery images are left alone. A Meta AI request is neither, and it is the interaction the whole category is being pointed at. Whatever the answer turns out to be, the two documents a careful person would read do not contain it, and that is a fact about the record rather than a suspicion about the company.
What that leaves a person able to check
The specification has a shape and it can be read.
The light means: content is being captured for the gallery, or streamed. It cannot be switched off, and defeating it now costs the wearer the camera — an escalation Meta shipped in July, carried independently at the time.
The light has not been specified for: a Meta AI look-and-ask request, or any other path where the sensors feed a service rather than a file.
And none of that touches the older objection, which was never about tampering. DEF CON banned the device because there is no consistent way to tell whether a pair is recording, and the ban admits no exception even for prescription lenses. An employment-law practice says a venue rule of this kind rests on the honour system, because the device cannot be remotely disabled and what it is running is invisible to everybody but the wearer. A brighter, tougher, unremovable light does not help a person who cannot see a two-millimetre indicator across a room — which is what every published method of spotting one runs into.
The most useful thing a reader can take from Meta's wording is the wording itself. It is a promise about a destination. It was written when the destination was the only thing the camera had.
