Read the NHC Cone Without Losing the Storm
The most dangerous mistake in a hurricane forecast is treating one familiar graphic as the entire forecast. The National Hurricane Center's cone is useful, but it is deliberately narrow: it describes uncertainty around the probable track of a tropical cyclone's centre.
Your risk may sit outside that shape. Wind fields can be wider than the cone, rainfall can extend far from the centre, and storm surge follows coastlines and water depth rather than the neat geometry of a track forecast.
Start with the question the cone answers
The cone surrounds a sequence of forecast centre positions. Its width is based on recent official track errors, so it grows farther into the future as uncertainty increases. It is not a map of the storm's physical size.
The US National Weather Service put the distinction plainly in its conversation with NHC leadership: people outside the cone can still experience hurricane impacts, and the cone was never designed to show every hazard.
That means two common readings are wrong:
- “I am outside the cone, so I am safe.”
- “The entire area inside the cone will experience the same conditions.”
The centre can travel within the cone while damaging weather extends well beyond it.
Watches and warnings answer a different question
NHC graphics can display hurricane and tropical-storm watches and warnings for affected areas. The NHC graphic description explains the colour coding used for those alerts.
A watch means the specified conditions are possible within the official time window. A warning means they are expected. Those alerts are about conditions, not a guarantee that the storm centre will cross every highlighted place.
For a quick decision check, read the alert text—not only its colour—and note the advisory time. A screenshot shared hours later can preserve a warning that has changed or omit a new one.
Wind, rain and surge need their own products
The NHC graphics guide lists products that complement the cone, including wind-speed probabilities, arrival time of tropical-storm-force winds, storm-surge graphics and rainfall information from the Weather Prediction Center.
Each product answers a separate question:

No single row replaces the others. A place can face dangerous rain with little interest in the centre line, while another may need to prepare for wind before the most likely track is settled.
Local instructions come last—and matter most
NHC provides basin-wide tropical-cyclone analysis. Local National Weather Service offices add location-specific forecasts and warnings. Emergency managers issue evacuation and shelter instructions based on local exposure, roads and response capacity.
When those sources appear to conflict, check their timestamps and jobs. A newer local warning may be responding to a hazard that the older national graphic did not yet display. An evacuation zone is also not the same thing as a forecast cone; it incorporates vulnerability, not just meteorology.
My five-minute reading routine is:
- open the current NHC storm page rather than a social screenshot;
- record the advisory number and issue time;
- read the watches and warnings;
- check wind, rain and surge products separately;
- finish with the local weather office and local emergency instructions.
The cone is the beginning of that routine. It should never be the end.
